Dirk Darrow is back in Ottawa. And there’s an investigation he needs your help with. It involves 2 Ruby Knockers and 1 Jaded Dick. Well what do you say?
Should you see it?
There’s been a huge bank robbery, explosions, deaths, police injured, but don’t worry, Dick Darrow is on the case. Tim Motley brings his infamous character back with an all new investigation full of horribly funny puns, sleight of hand magic and mind reading gone wrong.
Dick Darrow is a 1930’s noir private detective, jaded over the years, but that changes when he meets the beautiful Ruby Knockers, who is definitely more than she appears at first glance. Motley has an energy to his shows that is quite engaging and fun. He brings the audience into the story and then involves them with funny gags and the wit of a really good stand-up comedian.
The show is extremely well polished. Motley never slips up or out of character, even when a few attempts at hand writing analysis and mind reading go a little awry there still maintains a classical charm to his act.
The story that Motley’s character, Darrow is narrating though seems to drift away. It could be the echo in the cavernous multipurpose room of the church, or it could be that it’s a lot of talking and little action, but the Dick Darrow Investigation truly takes off and shines whenever the audience has a chance to participate. At times Darrow brings up audience members to become characters, other times he uses them for mind reading or sleight of hand magic tricks, but all in all, his trickery and audience inclusion is well written into the script to ensure that the audience never tires of what is happening.
2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick: A Dirk Darrow Investigation is a riot. It’s a lot of fun. And you’re honestly missing out if you miss this show!
One mark of a true stand-up or magician is how well he handles mishaps. Poor Motley had to redo his card trick three times when I saw this show because of the awful humidity in the church basement, and his toy gun never worked to full effect, but he braved on like a trooper and had the audience in stitches nonetheless. While the handwriting analysis bit didn’t impress me, his legerdemain did and the final stunt absolutely blew me away.
This is a stylistically strong show with a charming solo performer (although note that Dirk Darrow is an American P.I. so don’t come in expecting Motley’s Oz accent like some of the audience members did). There’s some physical comedy but mostly the humour of Dirk Darrow relies on puns. Motley plays this to absolute full effect though, involving the audience and responding adorably to their reactions: groans “only make me stronger!” and discomfort caused him to step back behind the line of good taste.
It was the perfect way to cap off an evening: sit back, relax, turn off your mind, and prepare to be amazed as well as entertained. If you’re looking for some light, silly fun – and all the puns you could ever hope for – this is definitely the show for you.
