Lara MacMillan presents an intimate cabaret full of classic songs and poetry by Leonard Cohen.
Should you see it?
Lara MacMillian does have a lovely voice; no frills, direct and to the point. It’s a style that matches well with Cohen’s poetry and lyrics. She did get me to listen more closely to the words and realize that maybe I need more Leonard Cohen in my life.
Where I think Lara Loves Leonard faltered was in its storytelling aspects. I wasn’t expecting any kind of narrative, but the anecdotes tended to be on the vague side and were a little too sparse for my liking. For me, that would have pushed this show into more theatrical territory. As it is, Lara Loves Leonard is a good show for dedicated Leonard Cohen fans or people looking for an introduction to his works.
But that’s just my opinion, and I’d love to know what you think! Which songs or poem was your favorite? Join the discussion in the comments below.
