The 2015 Ottawa Fringe Festival is only days away. This week, Allan Mackey and Valerie Cardinal talked with some of this year’s presenters and pored over all the available material for all 56 shows at this year’s festival in order to decide the ten shows they thought were the most exciting and/or intriguing. From the 12th to the 16th, they’ll be highlighting those shows. Then on the 17th, we’ll talk about a few honourable mentions and give you a video preview of five local shows sure to entertain. Happy Fringing!
What is The Adventures of Red Rascal?
“A masked bandit comes to the town of St. Anthony looking for his old master, with whom he has unfinished business. Along the way he must save the people from a foolish King, inept henchman, and a strong-willed Princess. This family-friendly swashbuckling tale of revenge and morality is full of laughs, swordplay, and chocolate.”
The Adventures of Red Rascal is directed by Chris McLeod and written by Jake William Smith, who is also one of the performers. It’s also performed by Sam Dietrich, Andrew Johnson, Paul S. Washer and Danielle Savoie.

Why We’re Excited about The Adventures of Red Rascal
A strong-willed princess, a mysterious masked man, sword fighting, revenge and more. Sounds a little like The Princess Bride? I thought so too, and it’s the reason I’m so excited about this. Even better, it’s family friendly! As a Princess Bride super fan, this kind of adventure is right up my alley.
I’m also a sucker for a solid sword fight, and since director Chris McLeod is a founder of National Stage Combat Training Partners I expect Red Rascal to deliver. Lastly, The performances take place in an outdoor setting, which is something I haven’t yet seen done during the Ottawa Fringe.
