Dandy Darkly wants to get over his fear of vaginas, so he’s going to spin you four tales concerning hoo-has, feminism, periods and more.
Should you see it?
Dandy Darkly is a very expressive character. Often it works in his favor, giving his performance a very special kind of energy. Sometimes, it can be a little too much, such as when he opens Pussy Panic by shouting about vaginas for a few minutes. Once the stories begin, they’re compelling, grotesque and unpredictable. However, it sometimes feel like Dandy Darkly is shouting them at the top of his lungs.
Dandy Darkly’s Pussy Panic certainly sets itself apart easily from the other storytelling shows at the Frigid Fest. Mr. Darkly is a modern day Grimm, telling tales that tend to take a turn for the terrible. They’re also wonderfully alliterative and rhythmic, and become almost hypnotizing when combined by music. Strangely enough, my personal favorite was the sweetest tale, one of two women falling in love in a nursing home. However, Dandy does tell a good dark tale, deliciously spinning the cautionary stories of thieves, scoundrels, villains and murderers. These stories are not for the faint of heart, but fans of camp will enjoy them.
