“Finished Girls” A Tale of Colonial Sex Trade obviously explores the colonial sex trade in Canada. It’s in the title people! The real question is, Should you see it?
Moira and Phoebe are two red-light district Bytown prostitutes in the 1800’s looking for a way out of the sex trade and into more legitimate, possibly government based, employment. Their employer and pimp, Cluster Armstrong is definitely not on board with their plans and has no real desire to see either of them go.
“Finished Girls” is actually a lot of fun. Shows that legitimately delve into the sex trade, without making a farce of it, typically are dark and heavy, but “Finished Girls” manages to address the horrors, atrocities and victimization of the sex industry while still being fun, quirky and memorable. The show is also raunchy, without being too raunchy.
All three characters are strongly written with their own unique personalities that clash and contrast to create entertaining theatre. Moira is the “no bullshit,” sometimes too serious, but not afraid to have a little bit of fun character, which is brilliantly contrasted with Phoebe’s ditzy carefree and love for everyone attitude. And then there’s Armstrong, who is definitely the Billy Mays of the 19th Century Sex Trade.
The actors are all very strong and the script is engaging and funny from beginning to end. It’s tongue in cheek and quite biting in a very clever manner. The weakest aspect of the show was definitely the a cappella singing that happened from time to time. None of the characters who sang were relatively strong singers, yet their lyrics and energy were just as captivating.
“Finished Girls” is a solid show despite a few hiccups here and there, but the cast’s chemistry is so strong that they make the little mistakes into chuckle worthy moments.
But that’s just my opinion and I’d love to know what you think. What did you think of the content of the show? What about the very unique and different characterization of both of the sex workers? Join the discussion and tell me what you think in the comments below!
