Popular Australian children’s entertainers, Hoot and Anny are on the Ottawa stop of their latest world tour. It turns out that this will be their final tour, but only one of them knows it. What starts out as a normal show, Annie announces it will feature a surprise announcement – which is news even to Hoot. It devolves from there into a deep dive inside their imploding relationship while they try their hardest to maintain the facade of continuing their children’s concert.
If you take all the funny things around, banana peels, clown noses, baby giggles, and you stuffed them into a blender to make a Positively Hilarious Smoothee™, and then you gave it to a pair of artists to drink, Kate Smith and Will Somers would deliver you Hootenanny! True fact.
Hootenanny! is bar none the funniest show around. Hot shit, are they funny.
From the duo’s “usual” children’s fare like Little Possum Oliver (and his run in with the fox), to the off the chain dance-along routinne, to Hoot’s uniquely Australian solo, you will laugh. You may never stop.
But one of the extra wonderful things about Hootenanny is how intricately layered the show is. It’s a bit of an emotional roller coaster as the baggage of a downhill ten year partnership floods onto the stage, all while Hoot and Annie try to maintain a semblance of professionalism and maintaining the concert for their child audience. It blends a nice satirization of children’s performance while holding onto the responsibility children’s performers have as role models, performing in front of children.
Hootenanny is not a show for children but it is a show for everybody else.
PS -If you think you’ve seen Hootenanny! before, think again. The show has been heavily reworked with a lot of new material, even a new character.
All new, all funny.
But that’s just my opinion and I would love to know what you think. Had you seen the show in 2015? What is your favourite song from the show? Join the discussion and leave a comment below.
