Why would you be the best couple to receive a child? This is the question Jess and Jay must answer as they plead their case in front of an adoption board.
Should you see it?
Jess and Jay are a couple who met during a car exchange deal over Kijiji. Now, they’re explaining why they would provide the best environment for a child. This is not your average interview, though; Jess and Jay are adamant about recreating some of the most important moments from their relationship, with a little help from Jess’ Mary Poppins-like purse full of props.
The French dialogue made me feel at home right away – my family is from a small village in Quebec, and this is how they talk; frequent curse words, English appropriation, grammatical errors, everything. Fucking Carl is incredibly authentic.
Fucking Carl is expertly written and performed by Caroline Yergeau and Louis-Philippe Roy. They take characters that could have been total caricatures and find the heart within them. The gender swap also allows the performers to find even more comedy within their characters.
Fucking Carl is a love story, plain and simple. It made me laugh until I cried, and left me with tears in my eyes because of its sincerity. It will touch your heart and fill you with all kinds of warm fuzzy feelings. Book your tickets ahead of time, though; Fucking Carl’s audience of 16 was sold out when I attended.
What did you think of Fucking Carl? What was your vote at the end of the show? Did your perception of the characters change over the course of 65 minutes? Join the discussion in the comments below!
