Crush Improv comes back to Ottawa Fringe with their tried and tested Spotlight On…
Should you see it?
Crush Improv are the nobility of Ottawa’s improv and Spotlight On… perfectly demonstrates why that is.
Spotlight On… starts with a kick off question to the audience requesting a short anecdote from their lives. From that, the members of Crush Improv draw out the themes, and throw off to their guest host — different every night, on opening night it was Kevin Reid — who uses those themes as inspiration to tell a story from his or her own life. This itself usually works out to include a few good laughs.
Crush then uses the elements of that story to improvise a series of – typically hilarious – scenes. Last night, this included everything from infringing on fast food trademarks, the dangers of drug use on the job, Full House and Perfect Strangers references, and the night ended in a triple homicide.
But your show probably won’t include any of these things, which is entirely part of the fun.
What makes Spotlight On… (or any Crush Improv show) wonderful, is the chemistry and the connection between its members – AL Connors, Brooke Cameron, Dan Lajoie, and Tim Anderson. This group know each other and play together so well that you’d swear they were performing a well-rehearsed sketch show.
And funny. Did I mention they were funny? ‘Cause they are. Once again my face was sore from all the smiles and laughs. They’re a laugh riot. And I wouldn’t use that term lightly.
Spotlight On… is one of those guaranteed shows. It’s there for you on those Fringe days the other shows you saw were just okay and you just want something you know will be great fun. And the best part is that it is also guaranteed to be 100% different every show.
But that’s just my opinion and I’d love to know what you think? Did you laugh your pants off? What was the funniest moment from the night you were there. Join the discussion in the comments below.
