The Day We Grew Wings is some fantasy story-telling meant to evoke the child in all of us. It’s written by Victoria Luloff, graduate of the Ottawa Theatre School, and directed by Stewart Matthews.
Should you see it?
The Day We Grew Wings is about Clara Jenkins. Something has happened in Clara’s life that has sent her retreating into her childhood world of imagination, imaginary friends, and grand story telling. Unfortunately, the real world ominously threatens to tear Clara from her sanctuary before she’s ready.
Written by Victoria Luloff (who also plays Clara) and directed by Stewart Matthews, The Day We Grew Wings is a fun bit of whimsy thanks to the stories Clara and her friends conjure up and act out in various ways. Luloff has limitless charm dashing all over the stage and her co-stars, Nicholas Surges and superstar Zach Counsil are both enchanting as Angle and Atreus.
Indeed the stories, which include dragons and pirates and fairies and magic, are a lot of fun to experience thanks to the three of them. It’s also surprisingly physical with a lot of running around and even some tree climbing. I would happily have watched them re-enact these stories and more like them even if that was all The Day We Grew Wings was.
Where I felt The Day We Grew Wings might have been slightly less successful was in how everything ties together, or doesn’t, with that overarching story – the aforementioned trauma that happened in Clara’s real life. It wasn’t something that hurt my enjoyment of the show, but, well, what it was was that I didn’t actually care about “real” Clara or what was happening in her real life. Maybe it was meant to be interpretive but there wasn’t enough story set in that reality to bring me into it – which is the one thing that could have made this a very powerful piece of theatre. True connection.
But that’s just my opinion and I’d love to know what you think. Did The Day We Grew Wings suck you in top to bottom? Did you have similar issues to it that I did? Did it just not do it for you at all? Let me know in the comments below.
