Sam Mullins tells us the stories behind his four truths in this sometimes funny, sometimes sad and sometimes philosophical piece.
Should you see it?
On Sam Mullins’ first day as a student in a stand-up comedy course, the instructor gives the class a task: write down four truths. Comedy, after all, comes from truth, he tells them. So Sam jots down his four truths. In the end, he doesn’t get the task quite right. While his classmates come up with a list of funny and topical truths, his list is highly personal and a bit more… heavy.
The Untitled Sam Mullins Project is the telling of the true stories behind each of his truths. It begins with a hysterical story about the time he was forced into doing blackface for a theatre production and ends with a story about overcoming struggle and the resulting impact.
Sometimes humorous and sometimes reflective, Sam Mullins delivers some compelling (and partly philosophical) stories that do so much more than entertain: they encourage you to set yourself free. Embrace life – embrace those truths you’ve been trying desperately to hide from and face them.
His honesty and openness felt like a breath of fresh air. There’s no doubt Sam Mullins is not only a talented storyteller, but a talented writer. This piece did much to inspire me, reminding me that anybody’s truths, delivered correctly, are stories worth telling.
But that’s just my opinion and I’d love to know what you think. Did you appreciate Sam Mullins’ storytelling ability? Were you inspired by the content? Join the discussion and tell me what you think in the comments below!
