“After a romantic encounter with a mysterious woman aboard his spaceship, Zach Zultana’s life changes forever.”
Should you see it?
Zach Zultana: Space Gigolo is an uproariously hilarious space opera of the highest quality. After Zach Zultana, asteroid miner, unknowingly sleeps with and falls for the boss’s wife, he’s blackballed and inadvertently becomes a revolutionary hero.
It’s every bit as awesome and a hundred times as funny as it sounds.
The style of the show is the most unique I’ve seen in a very long time. We have Zach Zultana telling the story in his own first person account, acting out characters as needed. We also get Jeff Leard the performer, on the other side of the fourth wall, describing to us in great deal what we would be seeing if this show were a big budget movie. It creates a completely realized story that plays out like a Hollywood blockbuster.
The gem that makes Zach Zultana shine is the show’s performer and co-creator, Jeff Leard. Leard is such a master of his comic timing and his craft that he is able to get laughs from a simple tilt of his head.
Leard also plays better with an audience than almost anybody I could name and it is evident to every one of us that he is having as much fun as we are. Even when he trips himself up, or an audience member does, he has the confidence and charisma to play it through and create an environment that feels like an experience we’re all having and enjoying together as opposed to us just being performed to.
Have I gotten across yet how brilliantly funny this show is?
It could be the intimate, contained space of the Arts Court Library but I have never seen a house more filled with laughter than at Zach Zultana. Easily the funniest scripted show at Ottawa Fringe and a do not miss.
But that’s just my opinion and I’d love to know what you think. Were you swept up in the tale of Zach Zultana: Space Gigolo? Have you seen funnier at this year’s Ottawa Fringe? Join the discussion in the comments below.
